As a young man in the 1980s, Lee found inspiration and sustenance in Taiwanese films and comics. In order to distinguish his work from the vast amounts of Japanese manga being published on the island, he prefers to depict local stories, rooted in the soil of Taiwan, which focus on the brotherhood between men who live tough lives. Midnight in Taipei has both qualities in common.
